Today I was able to hear Dr. Mark Hall speak about the Christian founding of the United States of America. Dr. Hall shared with us that when one is investigating the matter of Christian influence on our nation’s birth, it is best to focus on the question of whether or not the Founding Fathers were influenced by Christian beliefs, rather than trying to prove whether or not they were truly Christians themselves and the question that follows, which is, if they truly were Christians which exact type or denomination of Christian?
Dr. Hall raised another good point when he stated that many scholars claim the U.S. Constitution is Godless, yet the 1st Amendment to the Constitution states that the area of religion is to be protected from governmental mandates or prohibitions by Congress. He also mentioned that the idea of a “wall” of separation between church and state is a bad metaphor because it does not conform to reality, nor would such a wall truly promote religious freedom, since the same “wall” that would keep the state out of the church would also keep the church out of the state, blocking any Christian influence on government and laws.
I really enjoyed having the opportunity to hear Dr. Hall speak today, and I hope Faulkner University together with the Institute for Humane Studies will be able to bring us more opportunities like this one in the future!
