I’m a Student in the Electoral College

Earlier today, I was able to attend a lecture delivered by Michael Maibach concerning America’s Electoral College.
I have always been very interested in the subject of the Electoral College and the story of how our country’s Founding Fathers came to decide that it was the best way to avoid what French political scientist Alexis de Tocqueville called “the omnipotence (or tyranny) of the majority,” and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing what Mr. Maibach had to say about it.
I would like to share one highlight from Mr. Maibach’s lecture. One point he made that I could really appreciate was his refutation of the complaint of some Americans that the Electoral College is old and obsolete and needs to be eradicated. Mr. Maibach stated that just because something could be referred to as old does not mean that it is obsolete. He stressed the fact that both the Ten Commandments as well as the works of William Shakespeare still contain truths that are very relevant to today. I would like to add to this myself and say that this is absolutely true, because even though Shakespeare wrote the play “Hamlet,” hundreds of years ago, people can often be heard quoting the play in many different contexts, and it is the same with the Ten Commandments. Truth is truth, and it will remain so forever.
